Flowers, animals, automobiles, and famous artworks – inspirations of Tokio Kumagaï (1947-87) for his shoe design in 1980s are wide-ranging, filled with humor as well as imagination. During his promising career, suddenly ended by his premature death in 1987, Kumagaï gave birth to outstanding works which have been unchangingly attracting shoe-lovers and affecting designers of our time.

In 2022, the 75th anniversary of his birth, the KCI Gallery shows around 40 pieces which represent the designer’s creativity, tracing back the history of footwear along with shoes by other makers from the 18th century up to now.
