Burberry’s Autumn/Winter 2018 collection featured numerous looks in which rainbow-colors were added to the brand’s representative corporate tartan, “the Burberry check,” making a striking impression on those who saw it. The colors of the rainbow flag, which had been used since the 1970s to promote understanding of the LGBTQ community and to symbolize the movement for improving the community’s rights, had become more common throughout the world in the 2010s, but at this point in time rainbow colors had rarely been adopted by a high fashion brand. The implication that can be gleaned from the juxtaposition of the corporate tartan and rainbow colors in this outfit is that dealing with social issues head-on and giving voice to them through fashion is one of the roles to be played by high fashion brands. This collection was the last for Burberry by creative director Christopher Bailey (1971-), who had been continuously innovating the brand’s image since the Spring/Summer 2002 collection.
