Fascinated by the powerful and functional form of the trench coat, Tao Kurihara went to the opposite extreme by choosing delicate cutwork handkerchiefs for the material. Despite retaining the shape of a regular trench coat, the entire coat was created as patchwork without cutting the handkerchiefs. This transforms the strong, manly trench coat, giving it a cool, sweetly feminine image. After the debut of her own collection in the 2005 Fall/Winter Paris Collection with elaborate knit lingerie, Kurihara reinterpreted pre-existing forms and decorative techniques of clothing from her own perspective, converting the garments into whimsical, contemporary outfits in which she took tremendous care over every detail. As a fusion of a trench coat and handkerchiefs, this coat is an excellent example of her aesthetic sense.
