This book promoted the launch of Kouros, Yves Saint Laurent’s perfume for men. The illustrations and text are by Saint Laurent himself, with the illustrations printed on the right-hand pages and the text on the left-hand paged. It is an elegant collection in which beautiful words are used to describe the fragrance inspired by the free-standing ancient Greek Kouros nude male youth sculpture, while the sculpture and temple have been depicted with sophisticated illustrations. Released as a limited edition of 1,500 copies, the format of this work is inspired by the livres d’artistes style—a combination of literature with illustration—which was a style of high-end publication in France at the beginning of the twentieth century. The distinctive style and quality of this example is impressive and arguably gives us a glimpse into the brand strategy of high-end fashion brands to create an impact by promoting a product that is a fragrance and therefore cannot be visualized. Saint Laurent used techniques such as collage and printmaking to create greeting cards which he began sending to close friends from 1970, and these techniques have been applied in the illustrations in this work. The composition in several of the illustrations is reminiscent of Henri Matisse’s cut-out prints, and of note is the fact that Saint Laurent showed garments that were a homage to Matisse in his Fall/Winter 1980 collection. From the 1980s, the close relationship between Saint Laurent’s designs and works by artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque went on to become increasingly enhanced.
