The rose pattern is produced by chiné weaving, using warp threads pre-dyed with the pattern like Japanese hogushi weaving. The roses, blurred so that they appear wet, have been combined with appliquéd rose patterns cut out from the same fabric, together with lace and tulle, while the bottom of the skirt can be glimpsed through the overlay of lace. The tastes of the Belle Époque period are clearly represented in this garment that features the pale color created by the printed warp weaving technique together with the generous use of lace and tulle.
The House of Worth was an haute couture maison established in Paris in 1858 by Charles Frederick Worth (1825-1895). Worth’s clients included many members of royalty and the wealthy classes from around the world.
